Prepare for grander trends in filmmaking with the latest cameras

Styles and trends are always changing, but you might not have to "break the bank" to achieve innovation and stay current. Assuming that the newest trends in filmmaking and screening are always going to beyond your reach is a mistake that can unnecessarily limit your scope and leave you feeling like you'll never be able to compete with others in your field.

That doesn't have to be true with the professional video cameras you choose, as it's sometimes unclear which trends are here to stay. 3D might have seen like a flash in the pan gimmick, but it has grown to become ubiquitous even with many detractors.

Along those lines, there is a new technology currently being used in South Korea called "ScreenX" that allegedly allows for films to screen in a special 270-degree view. The Wall Street Journal recently featured a story on a short film that was recently debuted in this specific style.

This film required the use of multiple cameras as well as special set pieces and the positioning of the lighting equipment. Though the effect seems to be making a splash, it's debatable how far it will travel and what the longevity will be, seeing as the screens needed for this system cost the equivalent of more than $100,000 dollars to outfit a theater.

Rather than pursue these kinds of fads when it's unclear where they will finish up, it's more important (and better business) for an enterprising production company to find the professional camcorders that will have staying power and represent a "sure thing."
