The Sony PMW-500 was the first 2/3" PowerHAD FX CCD based shoulder mount memory which records the high quality 50 MPEG HD422 video as MxF files on SxS memory cards. These field proven CCD sensors, each with an effective pixel count of 1920 (H) x 1080 (V), give the camcorder an excellent sensitivity of F11 and a remarkable signal-to-noise ratio of 59 dB. Additionally, the large 2/3 inch type sensors can capture images with a shallower depth of field, giving users more freedom of creative expression.

The PMW-500 is studio-configurable, with timecode in/out, genlock in, HD/SD SDI and also features a SD recording and playback option. Designed to be compact and ergonomically well-balanced, the PMW-500, with a main body weight of just over seven pounds, provides a high level of mobility and comfort in a wide variety of shooting situations. In addition, it has a low center of gravity, ensuring outstanding stability on the shoulder; and the PMW-500 has a long operating time of approximately 170 minutes on a BP-GL95 battery thanks to its low power consumption of just 33 watts (while recording with HDVF-20A viewfinder, LCD on, lens, shotgun mic and one (1) SxS card)

The Sony CBK-HD02 Option Board for the PMW-500 is a SDI/composite video input, digital extender, and a 50-pin interface board for the PMW-500 solid state memory camcorder. It supports the 50-pin interface for the XDCA-55 camera adaptor for the Camera Signal Extender Unit. With the v1.1 firmware update, the option board can activate the digital extender function, pool feed input function, and the 50-pin interface can support connection of HDCA-702 MPEG TS adaptor to camcorder SDI/composite video input, digital extender, and a 50-pin interface board for the PMW-500 solid state memory camcorder
