Sony DVS-2000C

Model Details

The DVS-2000C chassis houses the main electronics, communication ports, and all input/output connectors. Four serial digital inputs (SDI) and three program outputs are standard.  A variety of component analog and SDI input configurations are possible, up to the maximum 16 inputs. Multiple slots are provided for options and upgrades. Two slots are provided for additional input boards. The DVS-2000C's dedicated control panel is engineered for simplicity and clarity of operations. The architecture is the familiar single-M/E style that's been a fundamental part of edit suites, remote vans, and production studios for over a decade. The panel includes a bright LCD screen that offers easy access to operational parameters, adjustments, and setup functions. The control panel also includes the DVS-2000C's unique FlexiPad™. From one centralized location the user can enter wipe patterns, store and recall complete panel snapshots, and enter transition rates. The benefit is as clear as the design - operational comfort.

·       Compact Processor

·       Switchable System Standard

·       The DVS-2000C provides four standard serial digital inputs, with expansion capability up to sixteen inputs. Both serial digital (SDI) and component analog inputs can be added. Video and Key sources are assigned to the bus-rows through the switcher control panel's convenient and clear LCD screen. When optional analog input boards are installed, the DVS-2000C allows mixed operation of serial digital and analog component video (and monochrome key) signals simultaneously. Because input configurations change from day-to-day with a compact switcher, all inputs have an auto-timing window with an adjustment range of +/- .4H. For simplicity and convenience, the "V-Proc" (Video Processing) feature allows adjustment of each input to compensate for common errors in image acquisition. With a range of +/- 200% for video, luminance, and chrominance, V-Proc actually provides a greater control range than a TBC. Additional adjustments are provided for black level and hue. The bottom line is that the DVS-2000C does not restrict you to one or two input configurations. You have the flexibility to configure the precise system to suit the customer's production and post-production requirements - and expand that system when the need arises.

·       When the optional analog input board is installed, the DVS-2000C allows mixed operation of serial digital and analog component video signals. This analog input board has two channels of video and key signals (Y/R-Y/B-Y & Key) and video processors. Up to two analog boards and two 2 channel SDI boards can be installed in the processor.

·       In the DVS-2000C's single-M/E architecture, two powerful effect keyers are provided as standard. An optional DSK (Down Stream Key) is also available, allowing three simultaneous layers and the ability to change priorities dynamically. A variety of creative key "types" can be selected, Luminance, Chroma, Linear, Clean, Depth, Pattern.

·       One superb aspect of the DVS-2000C's high quality key processing is the ability to fine tune and optimize the key signal itself - independent of the "fill." Through the use of over-sampling, the width, softness, and key edge can be modified in sub-pixel units. Edges can be softened and smoothed to add dimension and overall realism, and adjustments can be performed independently to the top, bottom, left and right edges of the key. Furthermore, because the process follows the edge of the key itself, even irregularly shaped key signals benefit from FineKey processing. From simple mattes to complex chroma keys situations, the DVS-2000C's FineKey processing is another simple tool - that yields visually powerful results.

·       With the BKDS-2070 option, additional patterns (including matrix wipes) are added. These include Star, Heart, and the popular "Diamond Dust" wipe. The enhanced patterns can also be combined with the primary patterns - enabling you to create new custom wipes from the DVS-2000C's creative toolbox.

·       In addition to the three standard program outputs, the DVS-2000C offers an assignable output option that provides both serial digital and analog component outputs. Any of the Program, Program Key, Preview, Clean or Processed Key signals can be independently assigned to these outputs as required. Compared to compact switchers with fixed output configurations, the DVS-2000C can literally adapt to the production or post production situation at hand, with the ability to assign (and re-assign) outputs from the control panel itself.

·       As the natural by-product of computer controlled switchers, the ability to store and recall control panel snapshots has become a fundamental requirement in production and post. Clients come back to change things. Producers like their keys set up just one way - and always that way. And technical directors like to work with special setups - even if the previous TD had a completely different setup. The DVS-2000C allows for all these situations and more, with the ability to store and recall up to 99 "snapshot" memories, and transition between snapshots. The snapshot data, as well as setup data, can be archived on an optional Memory Pack for long term storage. For live use or post, snapshots are directly accessible through the FlexiPad - for instantaneous recall - and the appearance (on screen) of a switcher many times as large!

·       The DVS-2000C communicates with editing systems from most major manufacturers via serial interface, including Sony's BVE-2000. With the Sony BVE-9100, Sony's superb status reporting feature adds many advanced operational modes: At the basic level, crosspoints can be assigned, patterns can be selected, transitions and durations can be controlled, and many switcher functions can be learned and stored in the editor's EDL. GPI control also provides auto-transition and memory recall functions. At the advanced operational level with the BVE-9100, virtually everything that can be controlled or adjusted in the switcher itself can be adjusted from the BKE-9402 Programmable Control Panel - the editing system's versatile "companion" product. It's another aspect of Sony's system integration that contributes to the simplicity of working with a Sony system - making complex tasks simple.

·       The DVS-2000C provides standard and format flexibility. You can operate on either the 525 or 625 line systems, and switch between the 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio - with all switching performed on the integral LCD screen.

·       The DVS-2000C's versatile and unique Depth Key option permits keys in the third dimension - the "Z" axis or depth axis in XYZ coordinate space. The depth information can be derived from a full-screen video source, a key source, the main mask, a subsidiary mask, or by using "Z-data" from the DME-3000 or DME-7000.

·       The DVS-2000C provides extensive key modifiers: Each keyer has an independent pattern generator, and a separate pattern generator for mask. Each keyer has two dual matte generators one for border fill and one for key fill. Each matte generator in turn has its own pattern generator. With the optional Key Border Generator installed, Border, Drop Border, Soft Edge, Shadow and Drop Shadow capabilities are added to the effect keyer. The option also provides continuous color, position, width, density and softness adjustments. Powerful "copy" functions allow you to transfer settings between keyers and matte generators with ease.

·       Sony's new FineChroma technology, available with the optional BKDS-2031 and BKDS-2032 boards together, provides an advanced level of chroma key processing typically found in external chroma key devices only. You get full 4:4:4:4 video and key processing, auto and manual modes, color cancellation functions, spot color correction, shadow and density control, plus a dual clip and gain feature that allows two separate clips in a single picture.

·       The DVS-2000C provides eight internal dual color matte generators - for Key-1 fill, Key-1 edge, Key-2 fill, Key-2 edge, DSK fill, DSK edge, Wipe border, and Color background. Each matte generator has color mix and wash capability, its own dedicated pattern generator, and extensive pattern modifiers.

·       This option provides storage for two individual frames, divided as needed between video only, or video and key signals. Frame memories can be used for the following creative applications: Grabbing fields or frames. Layering. Creating custom masks. Storing matte and fill signals. Painting from a user-supplied graphics tablet. Re-positioning live or frozen images. Storing and manipulating frozen z-axis images (in conjunction with Depth Key processing). Keying and mixing between frames, filling with video from an internal auxiliary bus or matte generator, then routing the results to any desired internal or external switcher destination. In much the same way that an audio sub-mixer allows you to get "creative" upstream of the main mix, Frame Memories provide video sub-mix functions upstream of the buses, with the resulting capability - and creativity.

·       Four auxiliary buses are available as a single optional board, with the standard set of crosspoints available. Using an assignment menu, you can place the Frame Memories, Key mattes and fills, and even the Z-data for depth keys on the Aux buses. In fact, every signal that enters the switcher or is internally generated - can be placed on an Aux bus. The feature is simple and logical. You can sometimes predict the signals you'll need before an edit session, but once you're in it, there's a confidence in knowing that everything is accessible via the Aux buses - on demand.

·       The DVS-2000C's Processed Key function is an "effects pathway" that solves the problem of routing signals to and from a DME digital effects system or color corrector, without complex patching. You can compose a key, clip and adjust it as desired, route it to an external device and re-enter it in the same DVS-2000C keyer - simply by pressing the Proc Key button. Whether you're flying logos or simply re-sizing a graphic, the Processed Key approach clearly illustrates the benefits of Sony's system integration concept. Best of all, the feature works with most other major manufacturer's DVEs that are equipped with a key channel.

·       For live field production and studio production, the DVS-2000C's DME-LINK enables specified DME-3000 and DME-7000 effects to be run by the switcher's fader - just like wipes and dissolves. In post, it's easy - the BVE-9100 editing system sends out RS-422 commands and the effect is initiated. But in live production, you simply don't have enough hands to trigger all the necessary devices. Sony's DME-LINK function runs the DME timeline, and the switcher's internal transition rate overrides the rate programmed locally on the DME. Over 30 basic effects are available for both single and dual-channel DME systems, and on the DME-7000, up to 12 user-defined digital effects can be used.

·       The priority between the Key1 and Key2 can be continuously changed. This priority change can be executed either by the fader lever or control knob.
